Malick Fofana appears to be heading to Sunderland in one of the most ambitious moves of the club’s latest recruitment drive. The Black Cats have reportedly agreed a deal with Lyon for the 21-year-old Belgium international, who has been given permission to travel for a medical before signing a five-year contract.

The transfer is not formally complete until the medical, paperwork and registration have been finalised. Nevertheless, Sunderland’s apparent success in securing Fofana ahead of Premier League rivals underlines the scale of the club’s ambition.
