The 2026/27 English football season is still in its opening weeks, but several compelling stories have already emerged from the data.
Manchester City and Arsenal have made perfect Premier League starts, promoted Hull City are yet to concede, and some established clubs are already facing uncomfortable questions. The early Golden Boot race contains three familiar names, while the Championship has produced a surprise leader and a goalscorer averaging one goal per game.
Small samples require caution. Three Premier League matches or five Championship fixtures cannot reliably predict an entire season. However, the opening data can reveal tactical changes, immediate recruitment successes and potential problems that may shape the months ahead.
Here are the most eye-catching numbers from the season so far, with statistics correct as of 7 September 2026.
Manchester City and Arsenal Have Taken Maximum Points
Manchester City and Arsenal are the only Premier League teams to have won all three of their opening matches.
Both clubs have collected nine points and recorded a goal difference of plus five. City lead the table after scoring seven times, one more than Arsenal.
Their identical starts provide an early indication that the previous seasonโs title rivals could control the championship conversation again.
Arsenal are attempting to defend the title they won in 2025/26. Their opening results suggest the transition from challengers to defending champions has not reduced their intensity.
Cityโs start is equally significant because the club is beginning a new period following Pep Guardiolaโs departure. Winning three consecutive matches does not prove that City have solved every transitional question, but it demonstrates that their competitive standards remain extremely high.
The first major conclusion of the season is therefore a familiar one: any team with title ambitions may already need to match an unforgiving pace.
Arsenal Have Conceded Only Once
Arsenalโs defence was central to their championship success, and that strength has carried into the new season.
The Gunners have conceded only one goal across their opening three Premier League games. Their goal difference of plus five matches Manchester Cityโs, despite scoring one fewer goal.
A controlled defensive record is particularly valuable at this stage of the campaign. Teams are still building fitness and integrating new players, which can often create mistakes and disjointed performances.
Arsenal have avoided that problem.
Their 2-1 victory over Chelsea also provided an early high-level test. Winning that match ensured Arsenal entered the international break with a perfect record rather than surrendering momentum to a major London rival.
Hull City Are the Premier Leagueโs Biggest Early Surprise
Promoted Hull City sit third after collecting seven points from their opening three matches.
Even more impressively, Hull have not conceded a Premier League goal. They have recorded two victories and one draw, scoring three times while keeping three consecutive clean sheets.
That is arguably the most unexpected team statistic of the opening weeks, with many tipping them to struggle.
Promoted sides are frequently advised to attack their first few fixtures with freedom, but defensive reliability usually determines whether they can remain in the division. Hullโs start suggests they have arrived with a clear structure and an immediate understanding of the level.
Their attacking numbers are modest, with only three goals scored. However, seven points from three matches without conceding represents an exceptional platform.
The challenge is sustainability. Opponents will collect more tactical information, individual errors will occur and Hull will face stronger attacking teams. Even so, three clean sheets have already reduced the pressure surrounding their survival campaign.
Five Teams Remain Unbeaten Outside the Top Three
Brentford, Liverpool, Newcastle United, Everton and Leeds United have all avoided defeat through their first three matches.
Brentford have collected five points while scoring five goals and conceding only two. Liverpool and Newcastle each have six goals scored, four conceded and five points. Everton have five points from a win and two draws, while Leeds have also collected five points with a positive goal difference.
The most notable inclusion may be Leeds.
After finishing 14th during their first season back in the Premier League, the Whites entered 2026/27 attempting to move beyond survival. Five points from three matches provide an encouraging start.
Evertonโs unbeaten opening is also significant. After consecutive 13th-place finishes, the Toffees need evidence that they can begin progressing towards the top half. Their early record suggests greater resilience, although more attacking output will be required.
Liverpool and Newcastle have both drawn twice. Their unbeaten records are positive, but the four dropped points already separate them from Arsenal and City.
Haaland, Fernandes and Isak Lead the Golden Boot Race
Three players share the early lead in the Premier League scoring chart.
Erling Haaland, Bruno Fernandes and Alexander Isak have each scored three goals in three appearances. That gives all three players an average of one goal per match.
Haalandโs presence is no surprise. His ability to begin seasons quickly and accumulate goals in short bursts is already well established.
Fernandesโ position is more intriguing. The Manchester United midfielder has often balanced creativity with scoring responsibility, but three goals in three games represents an especially productive opening return.
Isakโs start places him alongside Haaland in the early centre-forward conversation. Producing immediately for Liverpool suggests he has adapted quickly to a new attacking structure.
The standings remain extremely compressed behind them. A large group of players have scored twice, including Bukayo Saka, Martin รdegaard, Cole Palmer, Bryan Mbeumo, Kai Havertz, Joรฃo Pedro and Rayan Cherki.
Cody Gakpo Is the Early Assist Leader
Cody Gakpo leads the Premier League with three assists from Liverpoolโs opening three games.
His rate of one assist per appearance places him ahead of several players who have provided two, including Joรฃo Pedro, Phil Foden, Rayan Cherki, Riccardo Calafiori and Antoine Semenyo.
Gakpoโs creative return is particularly notable because Liverpool have scored six goals. He has therefore directly assisted half of the clubโs league goals so far.
When combined with Isakโs three goals, the data suggests Liverpoolโs reconstructed attack is already producing clear individual roles.
The concern is at the opposite end. Liverpool have conceded four times and drawn two of their opening matches. Their attacking data is encouraging, but greater control will be required if they are to keep pace with the two perfect teams above them.
Manchester United Are Scoring but Still Dropping Points
Manchester United have scored seven goals in their first three Premier League matches.
Only Chelsea and Brighton, with eight each, have scored more. However, United have also conceded six and collected only four points.
That combination is one of the competitionโs most interesting early patterns.
United possess the joint-leading goalscorer in Fernandes, while Mbeumo has added two goals. The attacking output suggests the team can create and finish chances.
The defensive record is far less convincing.
Six goals conceded across three matches means United are allowing opponents to remain competitive even when their own attack performs well. A 2-2 draw with Everton reinforced that tension between attacking quality and defensive vulnerability.
If United can improve their control without reducing their scoring threat, the data may simply reflect an unsettled start. If not, high-scoring matches and dropped points could become recurring features.
Chelsea Have Produced the Most Chaotic Numbers
Chelsea have scored eight goals, the joint-highest total in the Premier League, but have also conceded seven.
Their three matches have therefore produced 15 goals, an average of five per game. Chelsea have won twice and lost once, leaving them fourth with six points.
No leading club has produced a more extreme balance between attacking output and defensive exposure.
Cole Palmer, Joรฃo Pedro and Morgan Rogers have each scored twice. Joรฃo Pedro has also contributed two assists, giving him four direct goal involvements in three appearances.
Those numbers demonstrate the depth of Chelseaโs attacking options.
However, conceding seven times is not compatible with a sustained title challenge. Only teams near the bottom have allowed goals at a comparable rate.
Chelseaโs early football may be entertaining, but the statistical priority is obvious. They need to turn open matches into controlled victories.
Tottenham and Aston Villa Have Not Scored
Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa share the most concerning attacking statistic of the Premier League season.
Neither club has scored in its opening three matches. Both have collected one point and possess a goal difference of minus five.
Three matches without a goal is not automatically a crisis, particularly during a managerial or tactical transition. However, it creates immediate pressure.
Tottenham are attempting to recover after consecutive 17th-place finishes. An attacking return of zero goals suggests the rebuild has not yet addressed the teamโs most fundamental problem.
Villaโs numbers are equally surprising given their recent top-four finish and Europa League success. Their inability to score indicates either a temporary finishing problem or a broader issue with chance creation and attacking balance.
The international break arrives at a useful moment for both teams. Their next goal is not simply important for the scoreline. It could release a significant amount of early-season tension.
Fulham Are the Only Team Without a Point
Fulham sit bottom of the Premier League after losing all three of their opening matches.
The Cottagers have scored four goals and conceded seven, giving them a goal difference of minus three.
Their position is more nuanced than a conventional bottom-place start.
Fulham are scoring at a better rate than Tottenham, Aston Villa and Coventry City, all of whom have yet to find the net. The problem is that those goals have not produced a single draw or victory.
This suggests Fulhamโs performances may be more competitive than the table indicates. It also means defensive mistakes and game management are likely to be central concerns.
After four consecutive stable Premier League seasons under Marco Silva, a new managerial era was always likely to require adjustment. The opening data shows how quickly that transition must begin producing points.
The Three Promoted Teams Have Made Very Different Starts
Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City are experiencing contrasting introductions to the Premier League.
Hull are third with seven points and three clean sheets. Ipswich have three points after one victory and two defeats, scoring four goals but conceding eight. Coventry are yet to collect a point or score a goal.
That variation is a useful reminder that promotion does not produce a standard Premier League experience.
Hullโs defensive organisation has allowed them to settle immediately. Ipswich are demonstrating attacking ambition but have already discovered the cost of defensive mistakes. Coventryโs zero points and zero goals indicate a far more difficult adjustment.
Each club is working towards the same objective, but the early data suggests they will require very different solutions.
Swansea City Set the Championship Pace
Swansea City lead the Championship after five matches.
They have collected 11 points through three wins and two draws, making them the only unbeaten team at the top of the table with that total. Swansea have scored seven goals and conceded only one.
Their defensive record is the standout number.
One goal conceded across five Championship fixtures represents an excellent foundation in a division known for its intensity and unpredictability.
Swanseaโs plus-six goal difference is also the best in the league. They lead a tightly compressed group, with Middlesbrough, Queens Park Rangers, Bristol City, West Bromwich Albion and Charlton Athletic all sitting one point behind.
The early promotion race is therefore extremely open, but Swansea have established the clearest initial advantage.
Will Lankshear Has Scored Five Goals in Five Games
Middlesbroughโs Will Lankshear is the Championshipโs leading goalscorer with five goals.
His average of one goal per match places him ahead of Southamptonโs Cyle Larin, who has scored four, and a group of players sitting on three.
Lankshearโs goals have helped Middlesbrough move into second place with 10 points.
Early scoring runs can be especially valuable in the Championship. The divisionโs schedule is relentless, and a confident striker can convert tight matches into promotion momentum.
Whether Lankshear can sustain that rate is uncertain, but five goals in five appearances has already made him one of the clearest individual stories of the season.
Wolves Have the Championshipโs Most Productive Attack
Relegated Wolves have scored 13 goals in their opening five Championship matches.
That is the highest attacking total in the division and represents an average of 2.6 goals per game. However, Wolves have also conceded 10, leaving them ninth with eight points.
The numbers suggest Wolves have adapted to the attacking demands of the Championship but remain defensively unstable.
Their matches have produced 23 goals in total, an average of 4.6 per fixture. No team chasing promotion can rely indefinitely on winning high-scoring contests.
The positive is that Wolves possess sufficient firepower to challenge near the top. The concern is that their defensive record may prevent them from converting that talent into automatic-promotion form.
Burnleyโs Start Is the Championshipโs Biggest Shock
Burnley sit bottom of the Championship after five matches.
The Clarets have collected only two points, scoring six goals and conceding 12. Their goal difference of minus six is the worst in the division.
As a recently relegated Premier League club, Burnley would ordinarily be expected to challenge for immediate promotion.
Instead, they are the only Championship team still searching for a first victory alongside Cardiff City, although Cardiff have collected one additional point through three draws.
Burnleyโs 12 goals conceded are particularly concerning. Relegated teams often retain enough individual quality to score in the Championship, but defensive fragility can quickly undermine their financial and technical advantages.
The season remains young, but Burnley already need a significant response.
Birmingham City Are Unbeaten but Have Drawn Four Times
Birmingham City have not lost any of their opening five Championship matches.
However, they have won only once and drawn four times, leaving them 10th with seven points.
This is a classic example of an unbeaten record that can be interpreted in two contrasting ways.
Birmingham are resilient and difficult to defeat. Avoiding losses provides a stable platform and keeps them within reach of the play-off positions.
At the same time, four draws represent eight dropped points. Turning only two of those draws into victories would place Birmingham alongside the early leaders.
Their next stage of development must involve greater decisiveness in close matches.
What the Early Data Really Tells Us
The opening weeks have produced strong signals but no final conclusions.
Manchester City and Arsenal look immediately prepared for another title race. Hull have made the outstanding promoted start, while Tottenham, Aston Villa, Fulham and Coventry already need to address significant attacking or results-based problems.
Individual quality is also visible. Haaland, Fernandes and Isak have started quickly, Gakpo is creating consistently and Joรฃo Pedro is combining goals with assists.
In the Championship, Swanseaโs defence has placed them top, Lankshear has emerged as the leading scorer and Wolves are producing the divisionโs most open matches. Burnleyโs position at the bottom provides the clearest early warning.
The most important context is the size of the sample. The Premier League has completed only three rounds, while Championship clubs have played five times.
These figures should therefore be treated as early indicators rather than settled truths.
Even so, the opening data has already created several compelling questions. Can Hull maintain their defensive record? Will Arsenal and City remain perfect for much longer? Can Manchester United balance their attack and defence? Will Wolves control their chaotic matches? And how quickly can Burnley recover?
The answers will begin turning eye-catching early numbers into the defining trends of the 2026/27 season.
