Few fixtures carry the emotion, tension and local pride of the Manchester derby. For Manchester City supporters, victory over Manchester United can transform an ordinary season into a memorable one. When that victory arrives through a commanding performance, a dramatic goal or a title-defining moment, it becomes part of the club’s folklore.

From the famous 5-1 at Maine Road to the demolition of United at Old Trafford and an historic FA Cup final at Wembley, City have produced some unforgettable derby displays.

Here are the victories that stand among Manchester City’s very best.

Manchester City 5-1 Manchester United, 1989

Long before City became a dominant force in English football, the 5-1 victory at Maine Road gave supporters one of the club’s most cherished derby memories.

City had recently returned to the First Division and entered the match against a United side managed by Sir Alex Ferguson. The visitors were expected to demonstrate their greater experience, but City’s young team produced a fearless and thrilling performance.

David Oldfield scored twice, while Trevor Morley, Ian Bishop and Andy Hinchcliffe also found the net. Hinchcliffe’s fifth goal, finished at the end of a flowing team move, provided the perfect conclusion to an extraordinary afternoon.

The result became more than a heavy derby victory. It represented the promise of City’s youthful side and gave supporters a treasured moment during an era when sustained success was difficult to find.

For an entire generation of fans, the phrase “the 5-1” requires no further explanation.

Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United, 2004

The final Manchester derby at Maine Road had ended in a City victory, and the club maintained its home dominance in one of the earliest derbies at the City of Manchester Stadium.

City made a flying start when Robbie Fowler opened the scoring before Jon Macken added a second. Paul Scholes pulled a goal back for United, creating the possibility of another comeback from a team renowned for recovering from difficult positions.

This time, however, City refused to surrender control.

Trevor Sinclair restored the two-goal advantage, and Shaun Wright-Phillips completed the victory with a spectacular fourth. The academy graduate drove forward before sending a powerful shot in off the crossbar, sparking wild celebrations around the stadium.

The match combined everything supporters want from a derby performance: intensity, attacking football, local identity and a memorable final goal. It also helped the club begin writing a new chapter of derby history in its new home.

Manchester United 1-6 Manchester City, 2011

No list of great City derby victories could begin and end without the extraordinary 6-1 win at Old Trafford.

City arrived as genuine Premier League title contenders, but doubts remained about whether Roberto Mancini’s side could overcome the reigning champions on their own ground. Over the course of 90 unforgettable minutes, those doubts disappeared.

Mario Balotelli opened the scoring with a composed finish before revealing his iconic “Why Always Me?” shirt. United defender Jonny Evans was dismissed shortly after half-time, and City responded ruthlessly.

Balotelli added his second before Sergio Agüero made it three. Darren Fletcher briefly reduced the deficit, but City finished the match with a devastating late surge. Edin Džeko scored twice, with David Silva also finding the net, as City completed one of the most remarkable away performances in Premier League history.

The significance of the victory extended beyond local pride. City went on to win the title on goal difference, making the relentless pursuit of further goals at Old Trafford even more meaningful.

It was not simply a derby win. It was a statement that the balance of power in Manchester was changing.

Manchester City 1-0 Manchester United, 2012

If the 6-1 demonstrated City’s attacking power, the 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium showed their control, maturity and resilience.

The circumstances could hardly have been more dramatic. City and United were locked in an intense battle for the Premier League title, and the derby arrived with only two matches remaining after it. Victory would move City above their rivals on goal difference.

In first-half stoppage time, Vincent Kompany rose above the Man United defence to power David Silva’s corner into the net. The captain’s celebration, filled with emotion and determination, became one of the defining images of City’s title-winning season.

City protected their advantage throughout the second half and prevented United from registering a shot on target. The performance was disciplined, assured and worthy of the occasion.

The victory returned the title race to City’s control and paved the way for the unforgettable final-day triumph against Queens Park Rangers. Kompany’s header may have been the only goal, but few derby strikes have carried greater importance.

Manchester City 4-1 Manchester United, 2013

City’s 4-1 victory in September 2013 was one of the first major demonstrations of the team’s potential under Manuel Pellegrini.

Sergio Agüero opened the scoring with an acrobatic finish before Yaya Touré doubled City’s advantage shortly before half-time. Any expectation of a United response was quickly removed after the interval.

Agüero scored his second within minutes of the restart, and Samir Nasri added a fourth to complete a superb attacking performance. United managed a late consolation through Wayne Rooney, but it did little to change the mood of the afternoon.

City had played with speed, imagination and authority. Agüero was at his clinical best, Touré dominated midfield, and the movement of City’s attacking players repeatedly opened gaps in the United defence.

It was a comprehensive victory that helped establish momentum during another Premier League title-winning campaign.

Manchester United 0-2 Manchester City, 2019

Not every classic derby victory is remembered for a huge scoreline. Sometimes the pressure surrounding the match makes a controlled win just as impressive.

City travelled to Old Trafford in April 2019 knowing there was virtually no room for error. Pep Guardiola’s side was involved in a relentless title race with Liverpool, and dropped points could have proved decisive.

After a tense first half, Bernardo Silva broke the deadlock with a low shot at the near post. Leroy Sané then added a second, giving City the breathing room they needed.

The champions managed the closing stages professionally and recorded a vital victory on their way to retaining the Premier League title with 98 points.

This was City at their most composed. Faced with pressure, rivalry and enormous expectations, Guardiola’s players remained patient and delivered when the opportunity arrived.

Manchester City 6-3 Manchester United, 2022

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden produced a derby performance for the ages when United visited the Etihad Stadium in October 2022.

City were irresistible from the opening whistle. Foden scored the first before Haaland struck twice, giving the hosts a commanding advantage. Haaland then created City’s fourth for Foden as the pair took complete control of the contest.

Both players completed their hat-tricks in the second half, becoming the central figures in an extraordinary afternoon. United scored three goals of their own, but the final scoreline did not reflect the extent of City’s dominance for much of the match.

The performance carried additional meaning because of the goalscorers. Haaland was experiencing his first Manchester derby, while Foden had grown up supporting City and progressed through the club’s academy.

Together, they delivered one of the most devastating attacking displays the fixture has seen.

Manchester City 2-1 Manchester United, 2023

The 2023 FA Cup final introduced an entirely new stage for the Manchester derby. For the first time, City and United met in a major cup final, with Wembley providing the setting.

?lkay Gündo?an produced a remarkable opening, scoring after just 12 seconds with a brilliantly executed volley. United equalised through a Bruno Fernandes penalty, ensuring the match remained tense at half-time.

Gündo?an struck again early in the second half, guiding another volley through a crowded penalty area. City then managed the remainder of the contest to secure a historic victory.

The occasion made the result especially significant. City had defeated their local rivals in the first all-Manchester FA Cup final and secured the second part of a historic Treble.

Gündo?an’s goals, particularly his stunning opener, ensured the afternoon would have a permanent place in City history.

More Than Local Bragging Rights

Each of these victories tells a different part of Manchester City’s story.

The 5-1 in 1989 provided joy during a more unpredictable period. The 4-1 in 2004 created an early landmark at the club’s new stadium. The 6-1 at Old Trafford announced City’s arrival as a championship force, while Kompany’s header in 2012 helped turn ambition into a Premier League title.

Later victories reflected City’s evolution into one of English football’s leading teams. The 6-3 showcased a new generation of attacking talent, and the 2023 FA Cup final added a unique chapter to the rivalry.

The scorelines are memorable, but the greatest derby wins are defined by more than goals. They are remembered for what they meant, how they felt and where they led.

For the blue half of Manchester, these were not simply matches won. They were afternoons when City owned the rivalry, shaped their future and gave supporters stories to tell for generations.

What makes the premier League so special?

“The Premier League is one of the most difficult in the world. There’s five, six, or seven clubs that can be the champions. Only one can win, and all the others are disappointed and live in the middle of disaster.”
